Supernova remnants in molecular clouds: on cosmic ray electron spectra
نویسنده
چکیده
The particle acceleration process at a shock wave, in the presence of the second-order Fermi acceleration in the turbulent medium near the shock, is discussed as an alternative explanation for the observed flat synchrotron spectra of supernova remnants (SNRs) in molecular clouds. We argue that medium Alfvén Mach number shocks considered by Chevalier (1999) for such SNRs can naturally lead to the observed spectral indices.

Evidence of 10–100 TeV Electrons in Supernova Remnants
Analyses of the X-ray data of the five young shell-type supernova remnants Cas A, Kepler, Tycho, SN 1006, and RCW 86 suggest that some of the X-ray emission of these sources is non-thermal. This non-thermal emission is qualitatively consistent with models of the broad-band (radio-to-X-ray) synchrotron spectra of remnants and does not seem to be consistent with other non-thermal X-ray emission p...
متن کاملOn the Gamma-ray Spectra Radiated by Protons Accelerated in Supernova Remnant Shocks near Molecular Clouds: the Case of Supernova Remnant Rx J1713.7!3946
Cosmic rays (CRs) are thought to be accelerated in supernova remnants (SNRs). The most favorable situation for proving that the main, hadronic CR component is accelerated there is when CRs interact with dense gases, such as molecular clouds (MCs) that surround the SN shock. Here, a new mechanism of spectrum formation in partially ionized gases near SNRs is proposed. Using an analytic model of n...
متن کاملNonthermal Emission from a Supernova Remnant in a Molecular Cloud
In evolved supernova remnants (SNRs) interacting with molecular clouds, a highly inhomogeneous structure consisting of a forward shock of moderate Mach number, a cooling layer, a dense radiative shell and an interior region filled with hot tenuous plasma is expected. We present a model of nonthermal electron injection, acceleration and propagation in that environment and find that these SNRs ar...
متن کاملCorrelation of Supernova Remnant Masers and Gamma-ray Sources
Supernova remnants interacting with molecular clouds are potentially exciting systems in which to detect evidence of cosmic ray acceleration. Prominent γ-ray emission is produced via the decay of neutral pions when cosmic rays encounter the nearby dense clouds. In many of the supernova remnants coincident with γ-ray sources, the presence of OH(1720 MHz) masers is used to identify interaction wi...
متن کاملexcesses and the knee of the cosmic ray spectra — hints of cosmic rays acceleration at young supernova remnants
Supernova remnants have long been regarded as sources of the Galactic cosmic rays up to petaelectronvolts, but convincing evidence is still lacking. In this work we explore the common origin of the subtle features of the cosmic ray spectra, such as the knee of cosmic ray spectra and the excesses of electron/positron fluxes recently observed by ATIC, H.E.S.S., Fermi-LAT and PAMELA. Numerical cal...
